5 months of Traineeship in National Press Unit
From September 2023 until February 2024, I was a Trainee in the Press Unit of the EPP Group in Brussels. I was the only Italian Press Unit Trainee and I cooperate with the two Italian Press Officers in managing the internal and external communication of the delegation in the Parliament. I shared the desk with 12 colleagues from 12 different European countries, with whom I constantly exchanged opinions and breaking news from Europe. My tasks dealt with campaigning, media relations, press reviews, media monitoring, and much more.
In the last year, for the EPP Group, I coordinated the launch of 2 advertising campaigns on behalf of the Italian delegation. My role was to craft (alongside my supervisors) the political message we wanted to communicate, and then follow the work of the creative agency, making decisions on what content to implement among the solutions proposed. With me as a reference point connecting Italian EPP's press officers and the company, we realised visuals on the subjects of migration and violence against women. The campaigns reached around 1,7 million impressions in Italy.
I assisted my supervisors in managing relations between journalists and EPP Italian MEPs. Our work was to facilitate contact between the two spheres and contribute to ensuring that everything worked smoothly. I also contributed to drafting Media Lines for journalists, documents in which we expressed the position of the Group on certain topics. I did so for the dossiers on Mental Health, Non-communicable diseases (NCD), and the Nutrition and health claims made on food Regulation (NHCR).
I was tasked daily with drafting in the afternoon a national press review of the main Italian newspapers. In 3 or 4 articles, each press office from each Member State gives an idea to the rest of the Unit of the hot topics of the moment. I enhanced my ability to summarise complex topics and to improve my writing skills in English.
Around 3 or 4 times per month, I also assisted press officers in drafting the International Press Review, called Executive Summary, which opens all the national press reviews. It consists of a selection of the main breaking news, described using media sources from all over the world.
